Chapter 579 participates in the EAA Aviation Foundation's Young Eagle program by hosting numerous flight rallies each year, spring through fall. To date, over ten thousand youngsters - and many parents - have been flown by Chapter 579 pilots. We host open rallies at the Aurora Municipal Airport between April and October, typically on the 4th Sunday of selected months, between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Our members have also conducted a number of special Young Eagle events to support local organizations, such as church youth groups and the scouts, outside of the open rallies. See the "Current News" page for Young Eagle dates. No matter when it is though, the pilots and the participants appreciate the professionalism and pure fun that is typical of a Chapter 579 flight rally.
Other Activities
Chapter 579 members also contribute their time and efforts to other worthwhile endeavors, such as: EAA workparty weekends, Oshkosh conventions volunteers, EAA B-17 tours, regional technical workshops, FAA safety workshops, fly-outs and picnics among others.
The Chapter also conducts either a private or instrument ground school each year for Chapter members who want to get their Private Pilots certificate or add an Instrument Rating to their ticket.
Chapter members who are also aircraft owners typically have informal “breakfast club” fly-outs on Sunday mornings in the summer to airports within an hour’s flying time of Aurora that have restaurants on the field. Empty seats are usually available for those members interested in riding along.
Scholarships
Each year the Chapter sponsors two kids for a week at Air Venture camp at Oshkosh, WI where they learn not only about flying airplanes, but also how they are constructed and the various opportunities that exist in the aviation industry. Typically, one of the scholarships awarded every year is to a child whose family could not otherwise afford to send them to this camp.
Annual Awards Banquet
Each December, the Chapter holds its annual pizza party/awards banquet to honor the members who have made significant contributions of time and effort on behalf of the Chapter and the sport aviation movement.
